7 FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING DOWNLIGHTS FOR YOUR HOME

1.Size of the room and height of the ceiling
The number of downlights required in a room and the suitable placement distance needed between each one will depend on the size of the room and the height of the ceiling. A general rule of thumb is to plan for one downlight for every 4 square metres of floor space, but this can vary from room to room.

2. Purpose of the room
Consider what the room will be used for and select your downlights accordingly. Is it a task-oriented space, like a kitchen or home office, where you’ll need the light to illuminate activities such as reading, working or preparing food? Or is it a space to relax and unwind in a cosy ambience?

3. Colour temperature preference
Today’s LED downlights are available in a range of different colour temperatures from warm white to cool white. Choose a downlight with a colour temperature to suit the mood you want to create. Warm white is recommended for rooms where you want softer, relaxed lighting such as the living room, dining room and bedroom. Cool white is better suited for rooms like the kitchen, bathroom and garage.

4. Brightness
Keep in mind that while downlights should offer sufficient brightness for the task at hand, they should not create glare or cause eye strain. Installing a dimmer switch will allow you to adjust the brightness levels with ease.

5. Energy efficiency
With the rising cost of electricity, finding energy-efficient lighting solutions has become a top priority for homeowners. LED downlights are a great alternative to incandescent options as they use less power and last longer.

6. Installation
It’s important that your downlight of choice is compatible with your existing electrical system. You also need to consider insulation to avoid heat build-up which can be a fire hazard.

7. Style
The style of downlight you choose comes down to personal preference. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes and finishes and can be hidden or exposed. Take the aesthetics of the rest of your home into consideration when making your choice.
